Randy Timms has MLRA on his busy 2017 schedule

By Trenton Berry, Lucas Oil MLRA PR (Wheatland, MO) -- During the 2016 season, Wheatland, Oklahoma's Randy Timms narrowed his racing focus and found a love of Dirt Late Models. Formerly he was a standout Modified racer, competing regularly with the USMTS. Over time he tested the Late Model waters, before going all in on the division this past year.

The high point of the past season, for Timms, came in June at Tri State Speedway in Pocola, Oklahoma, where he picked up a special event win.

"It was pretty special to just get a win in my Late Model," said Timms. "It was reassuring to me and our guys. It let us know that when our stuff is right we can win. I just don't get to focus mentally on racing like a lot of my competition."

Indeed Randy is a busy man when not at the race track. He and his father started a trucking company, Western Flyer Xpress in 1990 and currently have 500 trucks and 1,200 trailers in their fleet. Based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma the company transports all kinds of freight across the country.

"I'm involved in overseeing basically every aspect of the company," commented Timms. "One of the things I really spend a lot of time doing is procuring new equipment. It's a never ending task. We started with 2 trailers that we owned, and since 2012 have doubled in size. I really slowed down my Modified racing about that time to help grow the business."

Over the past few seasons, Timms has established a friendship with 2016 MLRA Champion Jesse Stovall. They have even started buying and selling race haulers together. For the coming season he will continue to be a part of Stovall's racing efforts.

"I feel like there are synergies between us," stated Timms. "We have always gotten along good and complement each other well. I have no idea how it will work out on the track this year. I do know Jesse has what it takes to compete at the highest levels of our sport. I'm glad to help him. He is also a big help to me, because he is always working on the next thing to be faster and is really up to date with these cars."

Randy will start the year with a new Black Diamond Chassis. Considering the success Stovall has had in those cars and their partnership, it made the decision a no brainer for him.

His company will also be displayed on the side of Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Rodney Sanders' car as well.

"I've known Rodney forever," said Timms. "I used to wear him out in Modifieds when he was a kid, and now he wears me out! He's a great guy and we're just going to keep on with him."

For the coming season, Timms has his eyes on the entire Lucas Oil MLRA schedule, but knows there will likely be a work conflict or two.

"I am sure there will be a weekend where Jesse will be at the track and I can't make it. I won't ever be able to see the schedule months ahead and know for sure I can be at the scheduled race. I have to do my racing around work, and it will always be a week to week deal for the foreseeable future."

The first weekend of racing for the Lucas Oil MLRA is just under two months away. It will again originate from the Kosiski family's I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska, March 31, and April 1. The Spring Meltdown will pay $2,000 and $3,000 to win respectively.
